Firebirds Soar to Official USA Swimming Status
Raleigh, NC – September 16, 2024 – In a remarkable turn of events, the Firebirds swim team has officially been recognized as a USA Swimming team. This milestone comes just one year after the team was formed, growing from an unattached group of six swimmers to an official team of 19 athletes.
The Firebirds are led by Zion Hall, who, at 19 years old, is currently the youngest and only Black female head coach in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) area. Her leadership and dedication have been instrumental in the team’s rapid growth and success.
Champion’s Coaching, Inc., the nonprofit organization behind the Firebirds, was established to promote water safety and foster excellence and diversity in swimming within BIPOC and underserved communities. The organization has been pivotal in providing high-quality swim lessons and competitive training to children and young adults from diverse backgrounds.
“Our journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Deidra Hall, Board Chair of Champion’s Coaching, Inc. “From the day we came together to support our athletes, to becoming an official USA Swimming team, the Firebirds have shown incredible determination and resilience.”
The Firebirds’ recognition as an official USA Swimming team marks a significant achievement for the RTP community and sets a powerful example of diversity and inclusion in the sport of swimming. The team looks forward to continuing its mission of empowering young athletes and promoting water safety.
